HOW TO USE THIS CALCULATOR
  1. Enter the Foundational PEBD. This is the beginning date of the Marine's most recent period of continuous service for pay, in YYYYMMDD format (example: 20240115). Validate it against the DD Form 4 or DD Form 1966.
  2. Select Marine Status and Pathway Type. The pathway drives special rules - Military Academy service credits only on enlisted pathways (PAA 04-25 para 4.b.4). Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS) time is enlisted service and credits on every pathway, including Officer (PAA 04-25 Note 8).
  3. Add each period of prior service. One row per separate period, with service type and inclusive start/end dates. The Creditable column updates as you type - a green check in the Days column means the dates are valid. Use "Add Service Period" for more rows.
  4. Record any time loss. Add a row for AWOL, confinement, or other lost time. Deductible loss is computed on the 30-day basis per DODFMR Vol 7A Ch 1 and reduces creditable service. Check "Officer Time?" for loss during commissioned service - it is recorded but not deducted.
  5. Click Calculate PEBD. The breakdown shows the PAA 04-25 six-step method: begin totals, end totals, difference, +1 inclusive day per period, time loss, and the normalized result subtracted from the foundational PEBD.
  6. Act on the result. Print the CUI-marked report, send the MMPB-21 escalation package if the PEBD of record needs correction (MARADMIN 052/26), or open the Pay Comparison tool to quantify the pay impact.
Verify before official use. This tool is a reference. Confirm every result against source documents (DD Form 4, DD Form 214, NAVMC 763) and the MCTFS D188 remark before submitting a correction.
GUIDED EXAMPLES - LOAD ONE, THEN CLICK CALCULATE

Each example fills the form for you. Review the inputs to see how they are entered, click Calculate PEBD, and compare the result against the expected value on the card.

1. Single Prior Enlistment

The simplest case - one creditable period of prior Navy service. Watch the end-day rule (Dec 15 needs no adjustment) and the +1 inclusive day.

Expected: 3y 6m 15d creditable, PEBD 20200630

2. PAA 04-25 Official Example

The worked example from PAA 04-25 Section 6 - pre-1985 DEP plus two active periods, +1 day for each of the three periods.

Expected: 8y 7m 24d creditable, PEBD 19861116

3. DODFMR Lost Time (AWOL)

The worked example from DODFMR Vol 7A Ch 1 - one enlistment with 0y 1m 7d of AWOL deducted on the 30-day basis.

Expected: 2y 11m 16d creditable, PEBD 20140304

4. Military Academy Service

Academy time credits on the enlisted pathway. After calculating, switch Pathway Type to Officer and recalculate - the credit disappears per PAA 04-25 para 4.b.4.

Expected (Enlisted): 3y 9m 25d, PEBD 20210806. Officer pathway: no change

5. Creditable and Non-Creditable Mix

Post-1989 DEP without IDT drills is excluded, the active period counts. The analysis table shows Yes/No creditability per row.

Expected: 3y 0m 0d creditable, PEBD 20200301

6. NAPS to Naval Academy Officer

NAPS time is enlisted service and credits even on the Officer pathway (PAA 04-25 Note 8), while the midshipman years at the Academy do not (para 7.b Rule 4).

Expected: 0y 9m 25d creditable, PEBD 20220802. Academy years add nothing

TIME LOSS PERIODS

Record periods of lost time (AWOL, confinement, suspension, etc.). Deductible time loss reduces creditable service and shifts the calculated PEBD later.

DODFMR Chapter 1: Time loss applies to enlisted service. Check "Officer Time?" for any loss that occurred during commissioned service — those periods are recorded in the analysis but are NOT deducted from the calculation.
